Last week, Spain's Ecologistas en Acción launched "Parques con Salud" (Parks with Health), calling for recycled-rubber surfacing to be removed from playgrounds and schoolyards. Catalonia's draft law goes further, proposing a ban on recycled-tyre flooring in schools and sports centres.

The industry responds with studies showing the risk is low. But perception shapes policy — and it's already changing how buyers choose surfaces.

The safe choice for your project

• PE foam shock pads. They sit under the turf as a full layer, so kids never touch the material directly.
• Layer a shock pad under turf or EPDM to meet your fall-height requirement with a clean, uniform surface.

Three questions for any supplier

1. What is the surface made of — and what does the test report show?
2. Does it pass impact attenuation for your fall height (EN 1177 / ASTM F1292)?
3. How will it perform after 8–10 years, including in summer heat?
